Rio is one of the biggest cities in South America and renowned for breathtaking scenery, a warm sub tropical climate and some of the most exciting parties in the world. Two of the worlds famous beaches, the Copacabana and Ipanema are iconic, not just to sun worshippers in tiny bikinis but also because the location optimises the gentle grooving sound of the Bossa-Nova beat, a genre of music that was founded in Rio and famous worldwide during the early 60’s. The biggest single ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ is a classic song that still dominates smokey lounges and hotel elevators to this day.
Rio is blessed with spectacular natural beauty, with forest covered mountains that tower over the sparkling sea below. The famous Sugerloaf Mountain cable car offers a fantastic view of the area, as does Corcovado Mountain, where the famous Christo Redentor (Jesus) statue towers over the clouds below. In the city, visitors can enjoy colonial style architecture, cultural museums and historic churches in the older parts of town.
Once a year, 40 days before Easter, Rio literally explodes into life as the city gears up for the biggest Carnival festivities in the world. Beach parties, parades and free outdoor entertainment allow locals and visitors alike to samba their hearts out during the two week extravaganza. New Year’s Eve is also a great time of year for fireworks and beach parties.
